Anelli con le zampine. Il regalo di Natale che tutte desiderano. La fede che mi farei mettere al dito se mi sposassi oggi. Più che un trend, una religione. Lungi da me il voler essere blasfema, ma non credo di discostarmi molto dal vero dicendovi che l'anello con le zampine sta alla gattara pressoché come il rosario sta alla monaca - non lo portiamo solo perché è bello, ma anche perché è il segno della nostra dedizione, l'alternativa a quel tatuaggio che non abbiamo avuto il coraggio di farci.
Di quelli che, vedendocelo al dito, sogghignano ritenendoci fissate o matte, pensiamo "poveretto, non sai cosa ti perdi". In tanti, invece, ci chiedono "ma dove l'hai preso? quanto è bello!" ed è così che abbiamo l'occasione per fare un po' di pubblicità a un artigiano di grande talento.
Parlo di Eros Menci, un artigiano di Castiglion Fiorentino, che crea, prevalentemente con il bronzo, gioielli hanno come soggetto non solo il gatto, ma anche fiori, farfalle, greche e altri motivi più astratti.

Non solo zampine, quindi. Il ciondolo nella foto qui sopra è il regalo di mio marito per il nostro decimo anniversario di matrimonio. Anche la catenina è una creazione di Eros. Gatti, farfalle o soggetti astratti, si tratta sempre di articoli unici per qualità, durata, estetica, convenienza del prezzo e, se tutto se questo non bastasse, anche tutela della piccola produzione artistica made in Italy.
Se, infatti, dobbiamo proprio trovare un difetto a Eros Menci, è il fatto che, salvo abitare in quel di Arezzo e quindi fargli visita direttamente presso il suo laboratorio, non è facilissimo procurarsi le sue creazioni. Il suo brand ha anche un nome ("Orecchini italiani") che non riflette l'ampiezza della sua offerta commerciale, perché gli orecchini rappresentano solo una, e neanche la principale, delle creazioni straordinarie che scaturiscono dalle sue mani fatate. Non ha un sito web e, a quanto ne so, non si fa neanche pubblicità. In parole povere, è la dimostrazione vivente che, se si è bravi, del marketing si può fare volentieri a meno, anche se a me resta il dubbio atroce che, con un'adeguata strategia commerciale, Eros sarebbe diventato milionario. Ma magari non vuole diventarlo! e questo non fa che accrescere la mia stima per lui.

Sì, Eros, sono proprio io - quella cliente gattara-pazza e un po' autistica che, ogni volta che viene (solitamente a Cesenatico), ti fa vedere l'anello rosa con le zampine che porta al pollice sinistro, e te ne decanta le lodi ripetendo a macchinetta sempre le stesse cose! ("Ce l'ho da tanti anni, lo porto sempre, non si rovina mai, non me lo tolgo neanche per fare il bagno, è meglio della concorrenza, ma perché non ti fai pubblicità?" ecc. ecc.) 😃 !

Intendiamoci, non voglio stroncare nessuno: sono talmente appassionata di anelli con le zampine e gattosità varie che per me tutti gli artisti che li producono sono bravi. Credo di averli provati più o meno tutti, almeno quelli disponibili in Italia.
La produzione più conosciuta in Italia per gli anelli con le zampine credo sia quella della Collezione I Cuccioli. L'artista è Chiara Berdin, di Vicenza, che lavora con un metallo più nobile, l'argento, e devolve parte del ricavato della vendita dei suoi gioielli ad associazioni animaliste, poiché il suo brand professa anche un impegno sociale nei confronti degli animali, un valore aggiunto da non trascurare. Siamo sempre nell'ambito della piccola produzione made in Italy, gestita anche in questo caso da persone giovani alla guida di aziende che meritano sostegno, oltre che ammirazione e orgoglio per come rendono onore all'italianità nel mondo.
I gioielli della Collezione I Cuccioli sono bellissimi, e quando arrivano a casa (si ordinano via Internet) è una gioia scartare il pacchetto rifinitissimo e curato nei minimi particolari, non meno di quanto fa una sfavillante gioielleria del centro. Molti modelli sono anche personalizzabili, con incisioni che li rendono davvero esclusivi.
Non è un caso, però, che non abbia una foto da mostrarvi (era questo). La durata, almeno nel mio caso, è stata breve. La debolezza di questi anelli, infatti, è data dai fori praticati nel metallo per realizzare l'impronta della zampa. Se uno dei fori è vicino al bordo, e se voi lo bistrattate, si può rompere. Succede anche a quelli di Eros, ma solo nel modello a banda stretta. Con il mio anello della Collezione I Cuccioli, è successo dopo pochi mesi anche in quello a banda larga. Inoltre, la lamina è piuttosto sottile rispetto all'anello che ho ora, quindi è necessaria una certa cautela nello stringere ed allargare l'anello se decidete di cambiare il dito in cui lo indossate. Quello della Collezione I Cuccioli, per quanto bellissimo e anche più prezioso dell'anello che porto attualmente, è quindi un gioiello che vi consiglio decisamente di togliervi per fare i lavori domestici e anche per lavarvi le mani, anche perché il prezzo (intorno ai 60 EUR) vi farebbe rimpiangere l'incoscienza di non averlo trattato con più delicatezza.
Siamo invece decisamente nell'ambito del low cost industriale con questo terzo anello, che mi ha regalato sempre mio marito per uno dei nostri anniversari, acquistandolo tramite lo shop G di Gatto, vero e proprio punto di riferimento per lo shopping online gattoso.
Bello, vero? Al primo che indovina quanto è durato regalo un coupon per un cat sitting gratis! 😸 In realtà è ancora portabile, ma lo zircone centrale è saltato via, quindi non è più la stessa cosa. Diversamente dagli altri due, inoltre, essendo zinco, tende a tingere la pelle di verde. Come si vede dall'immagine, le mie delicatissime mani da vecchietta non hanno subito né infiammazioni né allergie, dunque lo ritengo un materiale sicuro, ma senz'altro meno igienico di quelli usati dagli altri due brand citati sopra.
Come l'amore romantico, questo anello è bellissimo finché dura, quindi ve lo consiglio se volete un articolo da portare solo una volta ogni tanto, cavandovela con una decina di EUR.
In conclusione, Eros Menci vince questa prova comparativa, stracciando la concorrenza, per diverse ragioni:
1) durata: l'unico anello con le zampine che non mi si è rotto, ma nemmeno usurato, è suo. Se volete un anello che duri una vita, però, dovete prendere quello più largo. Quello più stretto si usura prima. La durata degli anelli di Eros è comunque incomparabilmente maggiore di quella di tutti gli altri anelli con le zampine che ho avuto, e ne ho avuti davvero tanti.
2)
tollerabilità: altri anelli in metalli non puri (il bronzo è una lega
di metalli) possono dare allergia, tingere la pelle, o creare altri tipi
di fastidio. Con i gioielli di Eros Menci, a me non è mai accaduto
niente del genere.
3) estetica: è un gioiello vero. Non bigiotteria. Non è d'oro, ma questo secondo me è un vantaggio, perché è più etico e anche meno a rischio di furto. Come bellezza, è al pari delle creazioni della Collezione I Cuccioli, che però lavora in argento, dunque a voi la scelta del metallo che preferite, con relativo ragionamento anche sui costi.

qualità/ prezzo: l'anello che vedete nella foto che apre il post costa 15 EUR.
Veramente. A un prezzo così basso, questo artista ci regala
(letteralmente, direi) un gioiello di vero pregio.
Infatti, Eros, al prossimo banchetto che farai dalle mie parti - già lo sai - io verrò come sempre a stalkerizzarti e, al mio solito mantra su "Ce l'ho da tanti anni, lo porto sempre, non si rovina mai, non me lo tolgo neanche per fare il bagno, è meglio della concorrenza, ma perché non ti fai pubblicità?", aggiungerò anche: alza i prezzi! Ho capito che sei onesto e ti accontenti di poter fare il lavoro che ti piace e, in un paese come il nostro, di riuscire addirittura a viverci. Tutto questo ti fa onore. Ma la qualità ha un costo, e devi fartela pagare!!

One problem you may encounter if you want to buy one of these stunning jewels is to actually find them - they're not sold in shops, either online or in the high street. So, unless you pay a visit to Eros' art studio in Tuscany, your only option from abroad would be, I think, to contact him through his Facebook page - no, Eros Menci doesn't even have a webpage or an online store. He doesn't even advertise, anywhere (unless you consider word-of-mouth as advertising). Even the name of his business, "Orecchini italiani", means "Italian earrings", and although Eros does make earrings, they're definitely not the most representative items of his collection: so it's a brand name that doesn't really showcase the width and breadth of his creativity. Maybe this man is the living demonstration that marketing is indeed the art of selling ice to Eskimos, and you don't really need it if you're good enough. Or, to put it less bluntly, it simply means that, with better market positioning - or, in fact, with any marketing strategy - Eros would be a millionaire by now. His business is thriving, but there's no doubt it would be booming if he did anything to boost it. But, quite possibly, Eros doesn't want to be a millionaire. And, trust me, in a country like my own, obsessed as it is with "lo spread" (and I'm not talking about our pride and glory Nutella, I'm afraid) and money shortage more generally, this does mean standing out from the crowd.
Living in Italy, what I do to get my hands on these beautiful jewels is hunt Eros down, literally, at various crafts markets where he's a regular. Whenever I see him, I can't help going on about how his jewels are, in my opinion, so much better than their competitors - I show him the ring he made for me some ten years ago, and tell him it's still as good as new, even if I wear it 24/7/365, even in the bath, when I do the washing up, when I potter around the garden... You can't blame him for thinking I'm a loony.
Talking about competitors, his most popular in Italy must be the Collezione I Cuccioli. Handmade from silver by another spectacularly talented artist, Chiara Berdin, from Vicenza, these rings are also animal friendly, as part of their price goes to support quite a wide range of charities. When your lovely little ring box comes through the mail (this business sells only online), it's a feast for the eyes - it's chich, classy, and very well designed, just like you would expect from a high street jewellery. Some rings can be engraved with a message or initials of your own choice.
You will have noticed, though, that I don't have a picture to show you, as my ring from this collection was sadly short-lived. It's most certainly my own fault for wearing it all the time (including in the bath, to do the washing up, and to potter about the garden, as said) but the weakness of these rings is the fact that the pawprint holes may become fissured, especially if they're poked near the rim of the ring, and this will eventually cause the ring to crack. It did happen also with one of my Eros Menci rings, the narrow band version - but with my Collezione I Cuccioli ring, it happened with the large band too. It might be because this ring is somehow thinner than Menci's, so it requires some more TLC than I gave it, especially when adjusting the size to wear it on another finger. It's still an extremely beautiful ring, but one you probably want to take off before you wash up the dishes. The price (about 60 EUR) will also probably encourage you to treat it well, unless of course you're a careless klutz like yours truly.
For a much lower price, you can get an industrially produced ring, which doesn't have to be unattractive, but doesn't even aspire to be as much as a showstopper as its handmade counterparts - it's a different kind of product. This is another of my husband's gifts for one of our anniversaries, from the online shop G di Gatto, which enjoys enormous success among cat persons in Italy.
Looks gorgeous, no? 😻Now try to guess how long before it fell apart?? 😹
Seriously, you can still wear it - but the big bead, the "palm" of the paw, has fallen out, so it isn't as nice as it used to be. Also, being made of zinc, it may leave a greenish stain on your skin, although I do believe it's perfectly safe to wear, as my hands never showed any signs of allergy or swelling. So I still recommend this kind of ring, if you want a cheap option (about 10 EUR) that you don't expect to resist the wear and tear of everyday use.
To conclude, Eros Menci wins this comparison hands down, because:
1) his rings last longer: I've had my first Menci ring for ages, and it's never shown any signs of deterioration. If you want your ring to last a lifetime, go for the larger band - even the narrow one, however, will last much longer than the other brands;
2) they're friendly to your skin: unlike other alloys, Eros' bronze rings have never given me any problems with stains, itching or allergy;
3) they're beautiful: this is a real jewel, not a mass produced trinket. It isn't made of gold, but to me this is a plus, as it makes it more ethical and less likely to be stolen. If you want a more precious alternative, the Collezione I Cuccioli will provide an equally sophisticated jewel from silver - do factor this in the cost;
4) they're extremely good value for money: the ring in the picture on top of this page costs 15 EUR. Seriously. At such a low price, you'll get a handmade unique gift (quite literally a gift, as the price is low even by Italian standard).
So, the lowdown is - when we meet next, Eros, I won't only go on about just how beautiful your rings are, and how long I've had them, and how strongly I feel you should invest in some kind (any kind!) of advertising, to make yourself known to thousands of people who want to be your clients, but simply don't even know you exist. I'll also tell you to up your prices! You're one of the most honest traders I've ever met, and I do appreciate that you're grateful for the opportunity to make a living out of art, which is a blessing in itself, and even more so in today's Italy, where so many of our contemporaries have had to give up on their own talents for a job that barely pays the bills, if it does at all. Granted all this. But quality comes with a price - let us pay for it!
