Presepi di sabbia - Sand Nativities

It's that time of the year again...! 🎄 In about two weeks' time, throughout the coasts of Italy, you will find lots of nativity scenes sculpted in sand.
They're mostly made by local artists, for philanthropic fundraising drives organized by tourist syndicates. They're particularly popular in my area, Romagna, where almost each beach has its own sand nativity, and there's even a programme, called Presepi in Riviera, which allows you to follow an itinerary, from Marina di Ravenna to Rimini, to see them all.
Most are very well worth a visit, especially if a little furry tyke sneaks into the picture!
These nativities keep for a couple of months, thanks to a specific glue solution that is sprayed on the sculptures to preserve them, and they're housed under large tensile marquees throughout the Christmas season, to protect them from the elements.
Then, when all is said and done, and the Christmas period comes to an end, the nativities are left at the mercy of the forces of nature, and the wind and salt from the sea quickly dismantle them. But there's always a short period of time during which you can actually see the nativity still glowing in the chilly winter sunshine.... a bit sad, but beautiful, as you can see in these Before & After pictures.

Il conto alla rovescia è iniziato! 🎄 Le pro loco delle località marittime italiane, lo avrete notato, hanno già iniziato a invitarvi all'inaugurazione dei loro presepi di sabbia, che avrà luogo, nella gran parte dei casi, all'inizio del mese di dicembre.
Nella mia zona, l'iniziativa si chiama Presepi in Riviera, e si snoda da Marina di Ravenna a Rimini, in un itinerario che vi consente di vederne diversi, più o meno belli, ma sempre organizzati nel quadro di meritorie iniziative di raccolta fondi.
I più belli però sono quelli dove fa capolino un gatto! 😻
Questi presepi, si sa, sono effimeri. Grazie a un trattamento con una speciale soluzione chimica, tengono per circa due mesi, dopodiché la tensostruttura in cui sono alloggiati viene smantellata, e le sculture abbandonate alla mercè del vento e della salsedine. Triste, no?
Eppure, c'è un breve periodo durante il quale potete ammirare il presepe sotto una luce forse ancora più bella di quella natalizia - sotto il magico sole d'inverno, freddo e cristallino, dove i nostri beniamini di sabbia si possono anche accarezzare. Eppure, c'è un breve periodo durante il quale potete ammirare il presepe sotto una luce forse ancora più bella di quella natalizia - sotto il magico sole d'inverno, freddo e cristallino, dove i nostri beniamini di sabbia si possono anche accarezzare.
